Sewage treatment plant sludge (urban sludge) is the sediment produced during the purification of municipal sewage and industrial wastewater. It is a highly hazardous solid waste. If not thoroughly treated and controlled, it can cause serious secondary pollution to the environment. Safely and economically treating and disposing of municipal sludge has become a common environmental challenge worldwide.

Currently, after leaving sewage treatment plants, some municipal sludge in some parts of the world is dumped in disorderly temporary storage or landfills. This not only consumes significant land resources but also severely damages the ecological environment. In particular, wastewater contained in the sludge intrudes into groundwater, causing permanent damage to local groundwater resources that is difficult to recover from. Foreign countries faced the challenge of municipal sludge treatment decades earlier than my country, and through long-term practice, they have established methods for sludge treatment and disposal. New approaches to sludge treatment, harmlessness, volume reduction, and resource utilization are imperative.
